Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a severe injury late in the game against the Raiders on Sunday. The explosive pass-catcher got hurt late in the fourth quarter after hauling in a massive 55-yard reception. As he came down, a Raiders defender dragged him to the turf using a controversial hip-drop tackle.

Subsequently, Thornton’s left foot stuck awkwardly into the stadium grass while his body weight rolled over the joint. The extreme mechanical force caused his ankle bone to snap completely and pop entirely out of place.

Because of the intense game adrenaline, Thornton initially stood up to celebrate before collapsing onto the turf. The team’s medical staff rushed onto the gridiron to stabilize his leg in an air splint. He was carted directly to the locker room.

Dr. David J. Chao has been on fire today with the number of injuries that the NFL has seen on Sunday. Following Thornton’s injury, the former NFL team physician diagnosed a severe medical issue.

He evaluated the game broadcast and diagnosed a left ankle fracture-dislocation for the Kansas City Chiefs receiver. Consequently, the prominent doctor issued a clear graphic content warning to his online followers due to the footage. Chao specifically urged viewers to “judge the injury, not reaction” when reviewing the dramatic sideline video clip.

He noted that the player engaged in an “initial celebration of reception” before realizing the true damage. Furthermore, this painful delay happened because adrenaline can temporarily mask the severe pain of a clean bone break.
