PITTSBURGH — The wait is almost over for Steelers Nation. The Pittsburgh Steelers will open the 2026 regular season at Acrisure Stadium against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, and the early injury news coming out of Pittsburgh is encouraging as Mike McCarthy prepares for his first regular-season game as Steelers head coach.

There is still time before final game-status designations arrive, so Pittsburgh does not yet have a definitive list of players officially ruled IN or OUT. But McCarthy offered perhaps the most important update of the week when discussing the overall condition of his roster: “We’re healthy.” The Steelers are preparing their game plan with the expectation that their available starters will be ready to go.

The Biggest Injury Name to Watch

The primary name on Pittsburgh’s injury report is Joey Porter Jr., who was limited because of a back issue. McCarthy nevertheless indicated the Steelers are planning as though Porter will be available, saying Pittsburgh “game planned for Atlanta expecting everyone to play.”

That’s an encouraging development for a defense preparing to deal with an Atlanta offense capable of creating problems in several different ways. Porter has become an important piece of Pittsburgh’s secondary, and having him available would allow the Steelers to approach Week 1 without immediately having to reshuffle one of the most important areas of their defense.

Aaron Rodgers Gets His First Chance to Set the Tone

Then comes the name Steelers Nation will be watching on virtually every offensive snap: Aaron Rodgers. Pittsburgh didn’t bring in a veteran quarterback of his stature simply to survive games — the expectation is that Rodgers can provide the efficiency, decision-making and late-game composure necessary to push this offense to another level.

Week 1 will provide the first meaningful look at how everything fits together. DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. give Pittsburgh experienced receiving options, while the Steelers need their offensive line and running game to prevent Atlanta from turning the afternoon into a situation where Rodgers has to solve everything himself.

If Pittsburgh can establish balance early, Rodgers won’t need to throw the football 40 times for the Steelers to win. The ideal formula is much simpler: protect the football, create manageable third downs, hit explosive opportunities when Atlanta gives them up and allow Pittsburgh’s defense to keep applying pressure.

T.J. Watt Is Ready — But Pittsburgh Has a Plan

Defensively, T.J. Watt remains the player every opposing offense has to locate before the football is snapped. McCarthy has discussed keeping veteran defenders fresh through rotations, and Cameron Heyward made it clear this week that individual snap totals aren’t what matter to him.

“I only care about winning,” Heyward said while discussing Pittsburgh’s defensive rotation. His point is especially relevant for Watt and a veteran Steelers front: Pittsburgh wants its biggest defensive weapons fresh when the game reaches the snaps that actually determine the outcome.

That could become particularly important against Bijan Robinson. Pittsburgh defensive coordinator Patrick Graham specifically discussed preparing for Atlanta’s dangerous running back and gathering information from Steelers players who have faced him before, highlighting just how seriously Pittsburgh is treating the challenge of containing him.

Atlanta Has Injury Questions of Its Own

The Falcons also have several players worth monitoring as kickoff approaches. Their latest report included Billy Bowman Jr., Zachariah Branch, Brandon Dorlus, Kyle Hinton and Za’Darius Smith as limited participants, while quarterback Michael Penix Jr. practiced fully.

Again, limited participation does not mean those players are automatically out. The final reports later in the week will provide a much clearer picture, but Pittsburgh will prepare for Atlanta’s major weapons rather than assuming the Falcons will arrive short-handed.

One Offensive-Line Decision Could Matter

Another Steelers storyline to watch is rookie first-round offensive tackle Max Iheanachor. He missed time during training camp before returning for the final preseason game, while Dylan Cook received work at right tackle in his absence.

McCarthy praised Iheanachor’s talent but stopped short of declaring who would start at right tackle. Against an Atlanta front that will search for matchup advantages immediately, that decision could become one of the quieter but extremely important storylines of Pittsburgh’s opener.

Week 1 Starts at Home

There is something different about beginning a new season at Acrisure Stadium, particularly with a new head coach and a veteran quarterback leading an offense Steelers Nation has spent months waiting to see. Pittsburgh doesn’t need everything to look perfect immediately; it needs to establish the identity it wants to carry through the season.

Rodgers controlling the offense. Metcalf creating explosive opportunities. Watt hunting the quarterback. Heyward anchoring the middle. Porter potentially locking down the outside. Those are the names capable of turning Pittsburgh’s opener from simply the beginning of another season into an early statement.

The final injury picture is still developing, but the early message from McCarthy is encouraging: Pittsburgh expects to enter Week 1 in good health, and the Steelers are preparing as though their major pieces will be available.

Steelers Nation — who do YOU think will be the biggest difference-maker against Atlanta? Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, T.J. Watt… or someone else?
