Ponder, Texas — A community is left heartbroken after the tragic death of 17-year-old Caden Nowicki, a senior at Ponder Independent School District (ISD), who died from severe injuries sustained in a sledding accident earlier this week. Caden’s passing has shaken not only his family and friends but the entire town of Ponder, leaving an emotional void that will be felt for a long time.

On the afternoon of Monday, January 26, the incident occurred at approximately 2:25 p.m. on Amyx Hill Road in Denton County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) was towing a kayak, which was being used as a sled in a popular winter activity. Tragically, the kayak veered off the roadway, resulting in Caden being ejected and colliding with a nearby fence.

Despite immediate efforts to save him, Caden was airlifted to Medical City Denton with serious injuries. Sadly, he succumbed to those injuries, and his family’s world was forever changed. Caden passed away Thursday afternoon, as confirmed in a social media post by Ponder ISD’s Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, Marcus Schulz.

The ATV driver, 22-year-old Jackson Long from Yukon, Oklahoma, and the passenger, 18-year-old Austin Erickson, were unharmed in the accident. However, the loss of Caden has left a deep wound in the hearts of all who knew him.

Ponder ISD Superintendent James Hill shared heartfelt words in a letter to families earlier this week, describing Caden as “an outstanding young man who is loved by many.” Hill emphasized the school district’s collective sorrow and support for Caden’s family. In an effort to assist the grieving family, Ponder ISD is collecting food gift cards, which will be given to the family once school resumes. These cards can be dropped off at the Ponder High School front office or the athletic office.

“We ask that you keep Caden, his family, and friends in your fervent prayers and respect their need for privacy during this very difficult time,” Hill wrote. “Our hearts are with them.” The outpouring of support and love from the community has been overwhelming, and it is clear that Caden’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Caden was a student who touched the lives of many. Described as outgoing, kind-hearted, and always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need, his presence will be missed deeply by his classmates, teachers, and the staff at Ponder ISD. Caden was not just a student; he was a friend, a teammate, and a cherished member of his community.

The incident has prompted many to reflect on the importance of safety, especially when engaging in recreational activities like sledding and ATV riding. While these activities can bring joy, accidents like this remind us of the risks involved and the need to exercise caution. In this case, the tragedy of losing such a young life serves as a reminder that even the simplest of activities can have devastating consequences.

As the investigation into the accident continues, DPS has stated that no further information will be released at this time. The community, however, remains focused on supporting Caden’s family through this unimaginable loss. In addition to the efforts made by Ponder ISD, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist the family with medical expenses and funeral arrangements, offering the community an additional way to show support.

In these difficult times, the family has requested privacy as they grieve, and the community has respected their wishes, while still offering their prayers and heartfelt condolences. Caden Nowicki may have been taken from this world far too soon, but his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

As we reflect on Caden’s life and the tragic accident that took him from us, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with our loved ones. The impact of Caden’s loss is felt not just by his family and friends, but by an entire community that will continue to grieve and remember him in the days to come.

For those wishing to help, the GoFundMe page set up for Caden’s family is a way to contribute towards funeral costs and medical expenses, ensuring that they can focus on healing without the added burden of financial worry. You can find the link to the GoFundMe page in the comments section below.

Our hearts go out to Caden’s family, friends, and all those who loved him. May he rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in the support and love surrounding them during this incredibly difficult time. 💔
