One of college football’s fiercest in-state rivalries returns to center stage Saturday night as the Iowa Hawkeyes host the Iowa State Cyclones in the latest chapter of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Kinnick Stadium will be packed, the national television spotlight will be on Iowa City, and bragging rights across the state will once again be decided on the football field.
The showdown is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. Kickoff is officially set for approximately 6:30 p.m. CT / 7:30 p.m. ET, with Iowa’s latest game notes listing a 6:36 p.m. CT start. Most importantly for fans watching from home, the game will be broadcast nationally on NBC.
Streaming will be available on Peacock, which is simulcasting NBC’s Big Ten Saturday Night coverage. NBC Sports says its pregame coverage begins with Big Ten College Countdown at 7:00 p.m. ET, leading directly into the Cy-Hawk showdown.
The television broadcast will feature Paul Burmeister handling play-by-play, Todd Blackledge providing analysis and Kathryn Tappen reporting from the sidelines, according to Iowa State’s official game primer. Cyclones fans can also follow the matchup through the Cyclone Radio Network, including participating radio affiliates and supported audio platforms.
But this is much more than another nationally televised college football game.
This will be the 73rd meeting between Iowa and Iowa State, two programs separated by roughly 130 miles but connected by generations of rivalry. Iowa State enters the contest having won the previous two meetings and three of the last four. The Cyclones also won the 2025 matchup 16–13, meaning Iowa will have plenty of motivation when the teams meet again in Iowa City.
Recent Cy-Hawk games have been remarkably close. NBC notes that each of the previous four meetings was decided by one possession, with the teams combining for an identical 59 points apiece across those four games. That history suggests Saturday night could once again come down to one turnover, one defensive stand or one late special-teams play.
Iowa enters the rivalry after opening its season in dominant fashion with a 40–0 victory over Northern Illinois. Iowa State also began 2026 with a win, so both teams arrive at Kinnick Stadium at 1–0.
For Iowa, the key will be using the home-field advantage. Kinnick Stadium is already one of college football’s most intimidating environments, and a night game against Iowa State should take the atmosphere to another level. Iowa’s official gameday information says the contest is sold out, and the university is planning its first-ever football drone show at halftime with 300 drones recreating iconic Hawkeye imagery above the stadium.
Iowa State, however, knows how to win in Iowa City. The Cyclones have captured the last two road meetings against the Hawkeyes and will be attempting to win three consecutive road games in the series for the first time since their run from 1998 through 2002.
Expect field position, turnovers and special teams to become especially important. Cy-Hawk games rarely need huge offensive numbers to produce drama. Both programs understand the importance of protecting the football, winning at the line of scrimmage and avoiding mistakes that could hand momentum to the opponent.
And with the game being played under the lights, every big play should feel even bigger.
