This is not simply another game on the SEC schedule.

It is an undefeated-versus-undefeated showdown between two teams attempting to establish themselves as serious contenders as the calendar turns to October.

Alabama Arrives in Starkville Undefeated

Alabama enters the matchup with a perfect 4-0 overall record and a 2-0 mark in SEC play.

The Crimson Tide have already demonstrated considerable offensive firepower during the opening month of the season.

One of their biggest early tests came against Florida State on September 19. Alabama fell behind early but responded in impressive fashion, eventually earning a 50-36 victory.

Quarterback Keelon Russell was at the center of that comeback, throwing for 320 yards and three touchdowns while adding another 56 yards and a score on the ground.

Alabama finished that afternoon with 567 total yards, including 247 rushing yards, showing just how difficult the Crimson Tide can be to contain when their offense establishes rhythm.

Russell has continued to emerge as one of the key figures in Alabama’s offense. Entering the Mississippi State matchup, Alabama lists him with 1,129 passing yards, while Daniel Hill leads the Crimson Tide rushing attack and Ryan Coleman-Williams enters as the team’s leading receiver.

Now comes another major road challenge.

Mississippi State Is No Ordinary Underdog

May be a graphic of football and text

Anyone expecting Alabama to simply walk into Starkville and control the afternoon should take a close look at what Mississippi State has accomplished.

The Bulldogs are also 4-0 overall and 2-0 in SEC play.

Mississippi State opened its season by overwhelming ULM 62-13. The Bulldogs then traveled to Minnesota and earned a convincing 38-13 victory before going on the road again and defeating South Carolina 41-34.

They returned home on September 26 and continued their perfect start with a 31-24 victory over Missouri.

That means Mississippi State has already won twice on the road against Power Four competition while demonstrating that it can survive close games as well as dominate opponents.

The Bulldogs now have an opportunity to make their biggest statement yet.

Beat Alabama at Davis Wade Stadium, and Mississippi State’s undefeated start becomes impossible for the rest of the country to ignore.

Kamario Taylor Could Be the Key

One of the biggest reasons for Mississippi State’s explosive start has been sophomore quarterback Kamario Taylor.

Taylor enters Saturday tied for the national lead with 14 touchdown passes, while also leading the country in points responsible for per game at 24.0. He has generated 1,377 yards of total offense, the most among SEC quarterbacks entering the matchup.

That creates a fascinating battle against Alabama’s defense.

The Crimson Tide have already demonstrated their ability to generate turnovers. Against Florida State, Alabama intercepted three passes while holding the Seminoles to just 94 rushing yards.

If Alabama can pressure Taylor and force him into uncomfortable situations, the Crimson Tide could take away some of Mississippi State’s explosiveness.

But if Taylor is given time to operate, the Bulldogs have shown that they possess enough offensive firepower to make this a long afternoon for any defense.

What to Watch

Five predictions for Alabama vs. Mississippi State - On3

The opening quarter could be critical.

Davis Wade Stadium is expected to provide a charged atmosphere, and Mississippi State has designated Saturday’s game as a Stripe Out.

The Bulldogs will want to use that energy immediately.

An early touchdown, turnover or defensive stop could send the stadium into a frenzy and put Alabama in the uncomfortable position of chasing momentum on the road.

The Crimson Tide, meanwhile, will want to quiet the crowd.

Sustained offensive possessions, strong early defense and avoiding unnecessary mistakes will be essential.

Turnovers may become the biggest factor of all.

When two undefeated teams with explosive offenses meet, one extra possession can change everything. Alabama cannot afford to give Taylor a short field, while Mississippi State must avoid handing Russell additional opportunities.

The battle at the line of scrimmage will also be worth watching.

Alabama has demonstrated the ability to run the football effectively, while Mississippi State will need to prevent the Crimson Tide from controlling possession and wearing down the Bulldogs’ defense.

A Massive SEC Saturday in Starkville

The atmosphere surrounding this matchup extends well beyond kickoff.

SEC Nation is in Starkville for the top-20 showdown, broadcasting live from The Junction from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. CT.

That only adds to the feeling that this is one of Mississippi State’s biggest home games of the season.

Fans will begin arriving early, with parking lots opening at 7:00 a.m., Coca-Cola Fan Fest beginning at 8:00 and stadium gates opening at 9:00. The Bulldogs are scheduled to enter the field shortly before kickoff.

By 11:00, Davis Wade Stadium should be ready to erupt.

Everything Is Set in Starkville

This is exactly the kind of matchup college football fans wait for.

Two undefeated SEC teams.

Two nationally ranked programs.

One hostile stadium.

And an opportunity for both sides to make an enormous statement.

Alabama enters ranked No. 7 and determined to continue its perfect start. Mississippi State arrives at No. 16 with four consecutive victories and the confidence that comes from already surviving difficult road tests.

Something has to give.
